Lawn Care

Our Gardening & Wildlife Manager Ryan shares his top five tips to get your lawn in great shape for autumn.

1. Scarify your lawn to remove any dead grass and old moss. Work your rake in one direction first and then the other to remove as much thatch as possible. Don’t worry if your lawn looks a little patchy afterwards – it will soon recover and grow much better.

2. Aerate your lawn to allow more air and nutrient’s to get into the ground. This can also help areas that can get waterlogged with heavy downpours. The simplest way is to spike the lawn with a garden fork about 10-15cm apart going down as deep as you can.

3. Re-seed areas that may have become patchy or thin. It’s estimated that about 20% of your grass dies every year so it’s important to replace on an annual basis.

4. Apply a thin layer of top dressing to encourage existing healthy grass to spread out and thicken. You need to work it down into the holes created during the aeration process. This can be done with a rake or broom.

5. Once the grass seed has become established apply an autumn lawn care feed and weed. This will help maintain the health of the lawn during the winter and give it a head start for spring!

Follow all these steps and you’ll soon be rewarded with a lush, healthy garden that will make your neighbours green with envy! Visit our Gardening and Wildlife department in store for everything you need to care for your lawn.

Summer is here, the days are getting longer, and barbecue season is in full swing! Now is the perfect time to get your garden lawn ready for the sunnier days ahead.
We’ve put together a step-by-step guide for you follow throughout the year to spruce up your grass ready for the summer gatherings and outdoor fun!

Rake

In early spring, clean your lawn by lightly raking away the winter debris. This will help to clear the moss and allow more light and water to reach the roots of the grass. If you have any large areas of moss and weeds, use a product like Miracle-Gro Evergreen Complete 4 in 1 to clear it.

Areate

After doing this, your lawn needs a helping hand to avoid compacting down and to help water reach the deeper roots. This can be done with aeration which involves gently puncturing the surface of the soil with a garden fork to aid draining.

Mow

Choose a dry day for the first cut of the year in March or early April. It’s important to keep the mower blades on the high side. A light trim will help to encourage strong root growth which makes the grass a lot healthier and more resilient. Don’t overdo it – twice a month should be enough.

Reseed

If you notice any bald patches, you will need to reseed these areas. Simply rake over the area, apply lawn seed and then give it another gentle rake with some topdressing before stamping in gently. Make sure you keep well-watered.

Feed

Late Spring to early Summer (May to June) are good months to add a spring feed to your lawn to increase the productivity of your grass and also discourage pesky weeds and moss. A good feed will help your grass to grow greener and thicker. Always apply fertiliser and patch repair products soon after mowing the grass so they’ve got maximum time to get to work before the next cut.
